Icycle 2010!

Another Icycle in the books and this one was a true Icycle. Heavy snow and ice pounded the TN Valley and NC mountains, which caused the attendance to be really low. But as usual it was really fun to see friends, drink beer, and do a night dh run. This year British Ben’s light went out right before his run. So in typical Icycle fashion we did our run together off just my light. He had a mechincal and had to pull over so I finished by myself. Managed a third place and won some beer money.

The drive back was exciting to say the least. The NC road was scrapped and salted. The TN side was 1/2″ sheet of ice with s ow on top.

When its cold… you just have to get out and deal.

This was a solo ride on Sunday in warm conditions. It was a balmy 29 degrees. Saturday’s ride was 15-20 depending on elevation and time.

Lastnight I stopped by the skatepark on the way home. There was still piles of snow in the bowls and ice on the decks. I think that was why it was the thinnest crowd I have ever seen there. Right before I left I think there was only 8 people, including myself. So I took the opportunity to try and learn the spine. After watching 1spdbrian hit I I thought I would give it a go. At times it was ugly and I cleared it to flat. Other times I would hang up my rear wheel, but sometimes I would make it look OK.

Meg’s Birthday

Meghann’s birthday was on Friday and we spent the day together outside despite the cold temps. We ate lunch at the Tomato Head in Maryville. Then did some shopping at Little River Trading Post. Hiked a bit above Tremont and finished the day with dinner at the Sunspot with friends.

Downtown ride at new spots

Met up with the boys from Fountain City Pedaler on a cold night. Hit the skatepark and some cool grass jumps. Had fun and it felt good to spin the legs. One of these days I’ll progress in the skatepark and not look like a one hit wonder.

The only time….

It seem the only time a trials tire sucks is in subfreezing temperatures with ice and snow. Devin and I tackled Red Oak with unexpected snow and ice.
