The hardest thing I have ever done

Bear Hollow Hare Scramble…

Okay, so I had tried to get into dirt bike racing slowly. I tend to dive into whatever I am doing full tilt and I usually set myself up with high expectations. My plan was to do a hare scramble since it was described as most doubletrack and some singletrack if at all. Well this was on par with the most tech singletrack I have ridden at Browns and Duncans flats. But imagine riding that on the clock for an hour and half plus with 100+ other riders. My plan was to catch Matt (if I could) who started 1 minute in front of me and to pace him for a lap. Matt usually sets a pace that is comfortable for me. It sets a good rhythm for me to gain confidence and settles me down. Well a couple of minutes into my first lap I was passing guys a minute up on me and things were going well. After a mud hole I came upon a guy laying in the trail yelling that his leg was broke. I rode off the course and laid my bike down to help. I was amazed at how many people just passed right on by without giving any thought to help this guy. Luckily Ben stopped to help and we drug him off the course. Ben stayed long that I did but both of us did something that many, many other riders wouldn’t. I’m still amazed at that. I got back on my bike and started to catch and pass riders. Things were going good until the biggest and baddest climb of the course. I got knocked off line and stalled my bike. Getting restarted just SAPPED me of my reserve energy and things got worse. I started to make a lot of mistakes and wasted more and more energy that I didn’t have for some reason. Maybe it was the Lone Mtn ride on Thursday, maybe it was the trail scouting on Friday, maybe it was the DH runs on Saturday, or maybe it was the lack of food, or maybe it was the fact that I was just not physically ready for the pace that my brain tried to set. Either way I felt like I was going to black out at times and I got the chills at times, but I learned a lot that day about racing a 220 lb dirt bike. But it makes a 5 minute DH race seem like a stroll around the neighborhood. I congratulate Matt who got third in his class and Ben and Devin who seemed to handle it way better than I did. I’ll be better prepared for the next one. We had a good time and I wished I was more cognitive after the race to enjoy a beer with friends.

You think you’re in shape?

So after my ride on Wednesday night (on my brand new trail bike) was cut to 5 minutes due to a flat, I needed a good anger management session on Thursday. I took the day off from work to get a lot of stuff done around the house that had piled up. I have been re-wiring the garage for new lights and adding some outlets. Since I now have a “moto” work area near the vice I needed some better lighting. I installed 3 double florescent shop lights and a smaller single above the vice. Wow what a difference good light makes, but I digress. Anyway, I got freed up around 2:30 and headed off to Lone Mtn. I always think I am in good shape until ride there.

Tired

I had planned to take Monday evening off and rest up. But it was so nice out I wanted to get out and enjoy myself. I had plans with Matt to meet up at Haw at 7:30. I rode from the house around 7:00. My legs were tight and I was zapped. Three solid days of moto riding was harder than it seemed. I took a pretty slow paced and pinned a couple downhills and turns. Luckily I ran in Ben on my way back and he drove me on to my house. I could have made it, but I would have been worse off.

I have plans to watch Jasper tonight while Meghann has fun with her friends. I hope he is good. He is good almost all the time, which scares me. He must be due for a bad night.

3 Day Moto

I have been trying to convince Karl and Jeff to come up and ride the Windrock singletrack since we found it 2 months ago. I think I can say, they are probably glad they finally came up. We rode (what has got to be the best singletrack) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday night we rode Trails 1, 2, 24 and 22 to get them warmed and into the swing of Windrock dirt and rock. As usual Jeff has got way more throttle than brains and crashed pretty good twice right in front of me. The first time was a good tank swapper on slick, hard packed red clay. The second was a good water bar jump into a turn. He high sided over the berm and flew into a honey-suckle bush. Karl and I laughed real hard for quite a while on that one.

Saturday we hit the Duncan Flats singletrack and had a rough time between the humidity and heat. We didn’t plan well enough and didn’t bring enough food and water. We got whipped. Karl was borrowing my 150 and while he rode well, that bike is just too small for this kind of work. He bent the shifter peg and broke the clutch lever. No big deal, that is not the first time the clutch lever has been bent and it won’t be the last. Good thing they are $5.

Sunday Karl headed off the do DH runs with James, Loo etc. while Jeff, Matt and I headed off to find the other singletrack on Brown Flats. Luckily we ran into a bunch of guys on KTMs and they directed us to the start. Wow, this stuff was way harder than Duncan Flats. It was much tighter, had more rocks, lots of mud, and some deep ruts.

All in all it was a great weekend and I can’t wait for these boys to get back up here. Sunday evening Meghann and I took Jasper on a bike ride in his new bike trailer. Meghann found this online and its pretty nice. I think he had a good time, but I don’t think he fully understood what was going on.

Also, look what he has already learned to do.
