Trail 57

Posted by on February 28, 2011

I think by mileage Trail 57, at 11.5 miles, is the longest trail in the Windrock network and I have been wanting to do it for some time. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. Devin and I met in Beech Grove yesterday which started out sunny but ended up very wet, rainy, and at times so foggy we could see 30 yards in front of us. The first half of 57 is mud hole city and most of these are super soft. At least once both Devin and I got our bikes so stuck it took some major work to get them free. However the scenery was incredible. There was so much laurel, rhododendron, moss and clear running streams I thought I was on the other side of the Valley. The second half of 57 is more wide open but it was very rocky and the elevation changed rapidly. I think we went up and down the height of Cross Mtn twice. Some of the DH runs where the longest I can remember ever seeing. One section was down an old coal tramway and was like a huge staircase made out of cross ties. We also found, what looked like, hunting camps or old home sites in the middle of seeming no where. I can’t wait to get back in there and do some more exploring. We where running short on time and had to pass up countless options. Can’t wait to get back.
